Mentoring and Coaching

Coaching: Auto racer Stirling Moss was once asked where he learned the most about driving. He replied, "The best classroom of all time was the spot two car-lengths behind Juan Manuel Fangio. I learned more there than I ever did anywhere else."

As horizontal functioning changes the us-them paradigm to a commitment paradigm, leaders must switch from supervisory roles to mentoring roles, taking people from where they are to where they want to be. The political, social, and organizational lessons of the day teach us that people at work, home, are demanding less control from others and more power for themselves. Today people resent the "boss" mentality of traditional management. But they truly welcome mentoring.

Mentoring has been defined as "a relational experience through which one person empowers another by sharing God-given resources." But mentoring skills, which are now being taught virtually everywhere but in the church.

I want to change that and be able to combine Mentoring and Coaching. The church, can be best defined through the etymology of the word coach. The word coach first occurred in English in the 1500s in reference to a particular kind of carriage. The root meaning of the verb to coach, therefore, is to convey a special person from where he or she is to where he or she wants to be. Not until the 1880s was coach used in an athletic sense (to describe a person, who was tutoring rowers on the Cam River near Cambridge University), and then it retained its connotation of moving a person (the athlete) from one place to another.

A horizontal coach instructs, trains, and guides performers in some particular activity or endeavor. The coach's job is to identify the individuals' blind spots and provide whatever will enable performance beyond previous limits.

The assumption is that this mutual commitment to performer and coach--this partnership--is what breaks down us-them barriers to horizontal activity.

 

 

 

America's Moral Dilemma

We are in great need of a Spiritual Revival in America, Coaching for Jesus.Com will be teaching a class in February that will present some of the details and the history behind the "Great Awakening" revival that occurred in America from 1720-1760 and the impact this revival had in creating our great nation.

 We need this type of revival to sweep America again.

MAHATMA GANDHI said that there are Seven Deadly Sins that will destroy a nation. Currently these seven deadly sins are know running rampant in our nation today.

Wealth without work. This refers to the practice of getting something for nothing-manipulating markets and assets so you don't have to work or produce value, just manipulate people and things. Today there are professions built around making wealth without working, making much money without paying taxes, benefiting from free government programs without carrying a fair share of the financial burdens, and enjoying all the perks of citizenship of country and rnembership of a corporation without assuming any of the risk or responsibility. How many of the fraudulent schemes that went on in the 1980s, often called the decade of greed, were basically get-rich-quick schemes or speculations promising practitioners, "You don't even have to work for it"? That is why I would be very concerned if one of my children went into speculative enterprises or if they learned how to make a lot of money fast without having to pay the price by adding value on a day-to-day basis.

Some network marketing and pyramidal organization worry me because many people get rich quick by building structure under them that feeds them without work. They are rationalized to the hilt; nevertheless the overwhelming emotional motive is often greed: "You can rich without much work. You may have to work initially, but soon you can have wealth without." New social mores and norms are cultivated that cause distortions in their judgment.

Justice and judgment are inevitably inseparable, suggesting that to the degree you move away from the laws of nature, your judgment will be adversely affected. You get distorted notions. You start telling rational lies to explain why things work or why they don't. You move away from the law of "the farm" into social/political environments.

When we read of organizations in trouble, we often hear the hear the sad confessions of executives who tell moving away from natural laws and principles for a period of time and begin overbuilding, over-borrowing, and over speculating, not really reading the stream or getting objective feedback, just hearing a lot of self-talk internally. Now they have a high debt to pay. They may have to work hard just to survive-without hope of being healthy for five years or more. It's back to the basics, hand to the plow. And many of these executives, in earlier days, were critical of the conservative founders of the corporations who stayed close to the fundamentals and preferred to stay small and free of debt.

 Pleasure without conscience The chief query of the immature, greedy, selfish and sensuous has always been, "What's in it for me? Will this please me? Lately many people seem. to want these pleasures without conscience or sense of responsibility, even abandoning or utterly neglecting spouses and children in the name of doing their own thing. But independence is not the most mature state of being-it's only a middle position on the way to interdependence, the most advanced and mature state. To learn to give and take, to live selflessly, to be sensitive, to be considerate, is our challenge. Otherwise there is no sense of social responsibility or accountability in our pleasurable activities.

The ultimate costs of pleasures without conscience are high as measured in terms of time and money, in terms of reputation and in terms of wounding the hearts and minds of other people who are adversely affected by those who just want to indulge and gratify themselves in the short term. It's dangerous to be pulled or lulled away from natural law without conscience. Conscience is essentially the repository of timeless truths and principles-the internal monitor of natural law.

Pleasure without conscience is one of the key temptations for to-day's executives. Sometimes on airplanes I'll scan the magazines directed at executives, noting the advertisements. Many of these ads, perhaps two-thirds of them. invite executives to indulge themselves without conscience because they "deserve it" or have "earned it" or "want it," and why not "give in" and "let it all hang out"? The seductive message is, "You've arrived. You are now a law unto yourself. You don't need a conscience to govern you anymore." And in some ads you see sixty-year-old men with attractive thirty-year-old women, the "significant others" who accompany some executives to conventions. Whatever happened to spouses? What happened to the social mores that make cheating on spouses illegitimate behavior?

 Knowledge without Character - As dangerous as a little knowledge is, even more dangerous is much knowledge without a strong, principled character. Purely intellectual development without commensurate internal character development makes as much sense as putting a high-powered sports car in the hands of a teenager who is high on drugs. Yet all to often in the academic world, that's exactly what we do by not focusing on the character development of young people.

Commerce (business) without morality (ethics). In his book Moral Sentiments, which preceded Wealth of Nations, Adam Smith explained how foundational to the success of our systems is the moral foundation: how we treat each other, the spirit of benevolence, of service, of contribution. If we ignore the moral foundation and allow economic systems to operate without moral foundation and without continued education, we will soon create an amoral, if not immoral, society and business. Economic and political systems are ultimately based on a moral foundation. To Adam Smith, every business transaction is a moral challenge to see that both parties come out fairly. Fairness and benevolence in business are the underpinnings of the free enterprise system called capitalism Our economic system comes out of a constitutional democracy where minority rights are to be attended to as well. The spirit of the Golden Rule or of win-win is a spirit of morality, of mutual benefit, of fairness for all concerned. Paraphrasing one of the mottoes of Rotary Club, "Is it fair and does it serve the interests of all the stakeholders?" That's just a moral sense stewardship toward all of the stakeholders.

Science without humanity If science becomes all technique and technology, it quickly degenerates into man against humanity. Technologies come from the paradigms of science. And if there's very little understanding of the higher human purposes that the technology is striving to serve, we become victims of our own-technology. We see otherwise highly educated people climbing the scientific ladder of success, even though it's often missing the rung called humanity and leaning against the wrong wall.

The majority scientists who ever lived are living today, and they have brought about a scientific and technological explosion in the world. But if all they do is superimpose technology on the same old problems, nothing-basic changes. We may see an evolution, an occasional "revolution" in science, but without humanity we see precious little real human advancement. All the old inequities and injustices are still with us. About the only thing that hasn't evolved are these natural laws and principles-the true north on the compass. Science and technology have changed the face of most everything else. But the fundamental things still apply, as time goes by.

 

Religion without sacrifice without sacrifice we may become active in a church but remain inactive in its gospel. In other words, we go for the social facade of religion and the piety of religious practices.

There is no real walking with people or going the second mile or trying to deal with our social problems that may eventually undo our economic system. It takes sacrifice to serve the needs of other people-the sacrifice of our own pride and prejudice, among other things.

If a church or religion is seen as just another hierarchical system, its members won't have a sense of service or inner worship. Instead they will be into outward observances and all the visible accouterments of religion. But they are neither God-centered nor principle centered.

 

Politics without principle. If there is no principle, there is no true north, nothing you can depend upon. The focus on personality ethic is the instant creation of an image that sells well in the social and economic marketplace.

You see politicians spending millions of dollars to create an image, even though it is superficial, lacking substance, in order to get votes and gain office. And when it works, it leads to a political system operating independently of the natural law that should govern--that are built into the Declaration of Independence: "We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. . In other words, they are describing self-evident, external, observable, natural, unarguable, self-evident laws: "We hold these Truths to be self-evident." The key to a healthy society is to get the social will, the value system, aligned with correct principles. You then have the compass needle pointing to true north-true north representing the external or the natural law-and the indicator says that is what we are building our value system on: they are aligned.

But if you get a sick social will behind a political will that is independent of principle, you could have a very sick organization or society with distorted values. For instance, professed mission and shared values of criminals who rape, rob, and plunder might sound very much like many corporate mission statements; using such words as teamwork," "cooperation," "loyalty," "profitability,"' "innovation and "creativity." The problem is that their value system is not based on a natural law.

Figuratively, inside many corporations with lofty mission statements, many people are being mugged in broad daylight in front of witnesses. Or they are being robbed of self-esteem, money, or position without due process. And if there is no social will behind the principles of due process, and if you can't get due process, you have to go to the jury of your peers and engage in counterculture sabotage.

Living a Successful life

How to live a successful life is question that seems to be asked by everyone.   If you go to the bookstore you will find hundreds of books on the subject.   Almost every coach you will talk with has an answer or an approach to make you more successful.

As a Christian trying to live for God I face a daily battle to live a successful Christian Life.

(Galatians 5:17)  For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.

In life's daily conflict against the flesh, Christians must choose to live in the spirit.

My military training tells me that when I have an enemy that is determined to destroy me I must have as much knowledge about his tactics and capabilities.  Only with this type of knowledge can I defeat my enemy. 

There are two great examples in our Bible on how Satan work's to destroy and overcome.

Let's examine the Genesis account of the temptation (Eve) to the temptation of Christ  recorded in Matthew Chapter four.  First let's look at the avenues that Satan uses to attack each individual believer.

(1 John 2:16)  For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

·         1Now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? (Satan was making an opening statement that God had denied everything from them)  2And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: 3But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. 4And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die (Satan was making a statement to confuse the issue or to raise a question or cause one to doubt God) 5For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. (Then he made it appears as if God was unjustly trying to keep them from knowing and then he told a very clever lie that was somewhat true there eyes would be open they would know evil and good but they would not be God) 6And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat. 7And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons. 8And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.

·         16For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

Eve was tempted and fell into sin because she:

·         Listened to Satan

·         Whispered in her ear that God was not fair was trying to rob them of joy of knowledge and they could be equal with God.

·         Tampered with the truth

·         Outright denial, added to the word of God misquote

·         Open denial of the punishments

·         Jealousy

·         6And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise,

  Temptation of Christ

·         1Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. 2And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungered. 3And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread  (Lust of the Flesh is what Satan tried on the Lord Jesus Christ). 4But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. 5Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple, 6And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. (Here Satan tries to Get Jesus to fall for the pride of life) 7Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. 8Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and showeth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; 9And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me (Satan was trying to tempt the Lord Jesus Christ with the lust of the eye). 10Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. 11Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.

15.  List six results of the fall of Adam and Eve.

 Upon themselves

(1.) “shame, a sense of degradation and pollution;

(2.) Lost the relationship with God dread of the displeasure of God, or a sense of guilt, and the consequent desire to hide from his presence. These effects were unavoidable. They prove the loss not only of innocence but also of original righteousness, and, with it, of the favour and fellowship of God. The state therefore to which Adam was reduced by his disobedience, so far as his subjective condition is concerned, was analogous to that of the fallen angels. He was entirely and absolutely ruined.  But the unbelief and disobedience of our first parents brought not only on themselves this misery and ruin, it entailed also the same sad consequences on all their descendants.

Upon the rest of human race to follow:

(1.) The guilt, i.e., liability to punishment, of that sin comes by imputation upon all men, because all were represented by Adam in the covenant of works (q.v.). the sin of Adam is imputed to all his descendants, i.e., it is reckoned as theirs, and they are dealt with therefore as guilty; The effects of this first sin upon our first parents themselves were

(2.) Hence, also, all his descendants inherit a corrupt nature. In all by nature there is an inherent and prevailing tendency to sin. This universal depravity is taught by universal experience. All men sin as soon as they are capable of moral actions. The testimony of the Scriptures to the same effects is most abundant (Rom. 1; 2; 3:1-19, etc.).

(3.) This innate depravity is total: we are by nature dead in trespasses and sins, and must be born again before we can enter into the kingdom (John 3:7, etc.).

(4.) Resulting from this corruption of our whole nature is our absolute moral inability to change our nature or to obey the law of God.

 

Conflict between Flesh and Spirit

Infuriating Frustration

(Romans 7:14-17)  For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin. (How can I resolve the struggle within myself?)  {15} For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I. {16} If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good. {17} Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.

 Inherent Hostility

(Romans 7:18-21)  For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not. {19} For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do. {20} Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. {21} I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me.

 Two natures reside in each Christian, the carnal nature or the flesh, is the part of us that enjoys doing evil.

The nature of Christ is the new man who enjoys obeying  God's law.

 Inevitable Conflict 

 In Relation to the Flesh and the Spirit, 

 (Galatians 5:16-18)  This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. {17} For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. {18} But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.

 Works of the flesh (Galatians 5:19) 

 (19) Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,

 Sins of a Spiritual Nature (Galatians 5:20)  Idolatry, witchcraft,

 Sins of a Social Nature hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,

 Sins of a Societal Nature (Galatians 5:21)   Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

 Living in the Spirit

(Galatians 5:22-23)  But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, {23} Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

 1.        Love is the overarching virture of the fruit of the Holy Spirit

2.        Joy, the second virture of the fruit of the Spirit, contrasts with happiness, and elusive will-o-the-wisp that all people pursue.  Happiness is a superficial emotion that depends on circumstances or hope.  Joy on the other hand, is deep seated sense of well-being that does not depend on circumstances or prospectgs.

3.        Longsuffering is conquering patience and endurance

4.        Gentleness--Spirit led believers exhibit the same manner of kindness to the people in their circle of influence.

5.        Goodness--is the sixth virtue of the fruit of the Spirit.  As God's goodness is designed to led to repentance, the goodness of the Spirit in our lives convicts others and points them to Christ.

6.        Faith, is the only virtue that is both a fruit of the Spirit and a gift of the Spirit.

7.        Meekness is a product of the Spirit-filled life.  Unlike the contemporary meaning of the word, however the biblical term means being considerate, teachable, and submissive to the will of God.

8.        The virtue of temperance is the quality of self control.  It means possessing self-mastery in all aspects of life

 Two fold living

(Galatians 5:24-25)  And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. {25} If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

 1.        Crucify self!

2.        Dethrone sin!

3.        Yield you body to Christ

Differences Between the Therapist (Counselor) and the Coach

I. Who They Work With

Therapist works with people who are diagnosable:
-They fit into DSM IV categories (numbers used by doctors to categorize an illness).
-They are dealing with dysfunctions that are quantifiable like depression, anxiety, disassociation, addictions, etc.
-People dealing with old pain, old issues, or current traumas in their lives.
-People who are having difficulty functioning.

Coaches works with:
-People who are healthy and happy with their lives and there is no diagnosable mental state or disease.
-People who are designing their future based on having a strong personal foundation.
-People who want to double their income, have more joy in life, get the most out of business and life pursuits, etc.

II. Approach

 Therapist does:
-Usually face-to-face sessions.
-Usually does not give advice, does not tell patient what to do.
-Helps the patient resolve old pains and cut through old defenses (coping mechanisms).
-Helps patient correct cognitive distortions.
-Teaches how to be less reactive by changing behaviors.
-Helps with empowerment.
-Listens and reflects.

 III. The Relationship

Therapist:
-Relationship is an alliance totally related to knowledge of the patient's issues.
- Patient does not know personal particulars of the therapist.
-Growth of the therapist is not an issue.
-Strong boundaries involving stated legal and ethical limits.
-Therapist is required to handle patient emergencies.

The Coach:
-An equal partnership; Coach may share some personal information.
-Coach may experience personal growth simultaneously with client.
-Coach and client share information while the Coach is guiding the client toward understanding and growth.
-Awareness of stated boundaries. High level of ethics in place.
-No emergencies.
